Once again the Travelling Suitcase Library took over my local pub, Arcadia, filling it with books, and bunting.

A happy customer!

I was giving away Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses, a powerful dystopian YA romance book, and I was also joined by the lovely Jimi, who found out about the event through the World Book Night website, who was giving out copies of Casino Royale, which went down a treat with the pub regulars.

World Book Night @ Arcadia

We were joined by the incredibly supportive Leeds Big Bookend Crew, whose festival I'm really looking forward to, and the Leeds Ladyfest Crew were on hand selling awesome merch, the bags really came in useful for carrying the books back!

The Ladyfest Crew and the Awesome Bags!

And of course the Travelling Suitcase Library was its usual busy self, as most people turned up to the event with bags upon bags of books to swap.

Books Make People Excited!

This year's event was smaller than previous ones, World Book Night is now such a big event with so many people giving books all over Leeds-I was really chuffed to be handed some in Leeds Book Station by Leeds Met Library-it is hard for someone on their own to organise. I couldn't do a buffet, and the least said about my buns the better. But for the people who came, and supported the event for the third year running (and it was SO NICE to have people bringing books they got last year and loved to be swapped again) we had a lovely evening, I got to wear a frock, and many people found a stack of books.

I'm really pleased to be able to once again celebrate World Book Night at the wonderful Arcadia Bar, for the third time.

World Book Night is the wonderful event that sees thousands of people been given a book, recommended by another person, for free. This matches the ethos of the Travelling Suitcase Library completing and I'm really proud to keep it local, in my favourite pub, and once again be able to share books and reading with the regulars and locals of Headingley.

I'll be there, Travelling Suitcase Library is tow, from 7ish, and we'll be having a book party until about 10. I'm giving away copies of Malorie Blackman's wonderful book Noughts and Crosses, which you must read if you haven't, as well as the regular book swap.

I'll be using the downstairs side room, so it will be accessible. Arcadia doesn't allow children in the pub, sadly, as it doesn't have a licence for them, or pub crawls or fancy dress. I'm also claiming the space as body positive and Leeds Ladyfest will be selling tickets for their calender lotto. There may also be cake.

If you're a giver, and this sounds like your thing, please do join us. You can email me bookelfleeds @ Gmail dot com, join the Facebook group, or just turn up on the night.
Happy World Book Day!

Today I'm going back to Malton to celebrate World Book Day with the lovely people at the Ryedale Book Festival, which I took the Travelling Suitcase Library to last October. I love Malton, it's such a beautiful little town only an hour away from Leeds by train, and I received such a warm welcome last time I'm really looking forward to tonight.

I'll be in the Old Lodge Hotel, on Old Maltongate, running a Recommended Read session. This is where I talk about the benefits of reading for pleasure, my reading journey and introduce a couple of my favourite books, the open the floor to ask others about theirs. I'll be joined by some local authors as well who I'm sure will be keen to discuss their tomes, and writing.

I'll be also having the usual bookswap, which will be free. Entrance to the main event costs £4 on the door.

And watch this space for World Book Night info...!
With World Book Night being such a blast this year at Arcadia, we've decided to do it all again, with a spooky themed book swap to celebrate Halloween.

Bring your favourite scary stories, vampire thrillers, werewolf chillers or witchy fiction.

Whether you love Point Horrors, are enthralled by the weird creepy world or Stephen King, or love your True Blood, all book tastes will be catered for as ever. I'll be filling up the Travelling Suitcase Library with as many scary stories as I can lay my hands on.

Arcadia will be serving Spooky Snacks on the menu to compliment the evening from 5-8, and the book swap will probably go on till about 9 ish.

We'll see you there! Wednesday 31 October from 5-9 ish,

Arcadia does not allow anyone wearing fancy dress in the pub, this isn't cos they're mean, its a licencing thing, so please please please don't come in fancy dress cos you won't get served or be able to swap any books! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544697137603948651.post-63216244013648828482012-09-18T10:12:00.002-07:002012-09-18T10:12:38.652-07:00Hearty Words @ Love Arts Festival Reading is proven to improve mental health, heck reading probably improves your disgestion that's how good for you it is. Trying to make people happy is a big thing for the Travelling Suitcase Library and that's why I'm really pleased to help promote Leeds Libraries #heartywords project, that aims to share those books that make your heart sing around Leeds.

Leeds Libraries and Love Arts Festival are starting a conversation to unearth the books that mean the most to people in Leeds. They are inviting you to thinkabout which reads have uplifted, soothed, inspired, challenged or moved you and to talk about them.

One of the best bits about a book swap is the talking (and often laughter) that goes with it. We would love to know what makes specific books special toyou and why you would share them with someone else.

To get involved, join the debate on Twitter #heartywords, post your thoughts on the Leeds Libraries Facebook Page www.facebook.com/leedslibraries and look out for special postcards in libraries, on mobile libraries and at Love Arts festival events.

The industrious librarians will be collecting your choice of book (and it can be any genre, any type) and creating a longlist in November to see whether people share some of the same choices. In December, they will shortlist and produce book displays with copies in library branches across the city. Visit your local library to see if your book is included.

My personal books that always cheer me up I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith and Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons. I'm looking forward to finding out everyone elses. Yeah, probably. Come to the book swap.

The aim of the session is to talk about a range of books that I love, from Cold Comfort Farm to Game of Thrones, and encourage others to talk about their favourite books, in an open, safe and non-judgemental environment.

Although reading as a hobby is bigger than ever, there are book clubs galore and Lit Fests popping up all over the shop, talking about the books you love, rather than the books you've been told to read, can be quite a scary experience-what if no one else likes it? What if you say the wrong thing?

This workshop will try to end your fears! There are no 'wrong' books, and if you just want to come along and learn a bit more about why reading is so important, and gain some inspiration from others then you can!

The workshop is from 2 pm and is held in the Milton Rooms. Tickets will be available from the 1 September, you can find more information by ringing the Malton Tourist Information Centre on 01653 600 048. Or find more information by visiting www.ryedalebookfestival.com Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544697137603948651.post-43314102934294173422012-05-28T02:02:00.002-07:002012-05-28T02:02:41.543-07:00Disclaimer...In a recent article in the Yorkshire Evening Post, it says I work at Keighley College. I have to say that I don't work at Keighley College, I work at Leeds City College, Keighley Campus.
Just as soon as I can figure how to get them onto my computer, this piece will include photos...)

World Book Night is fast becoming My Favourite Night Of The Year. After we stormed it last year at Arcadia, I was incredibly nervous about doing it all over again this year. For one thing, the event is a lot BIGGER (which is of course fantastic) and a lot more events were happening all over Leeds, so the competition was intense. Also, how the hell was I supposed to promote an event on a Monday????

Of course all my fears were unfounded because it turns out that people just chuffing love books, and more importantly love booze and books, so a jam packed pub enjoyed a heady night of both.

Oh yes, and there was a buffet.

We started out with a table full of The Player of Games by Iain M Banks, donated by my gorgeous and wonderful friend Matt who was a bloody rock throughout, and was happy to talk about the wonder of reading and introduce the concept of the Travelling Suitcase Library whilst I was busy flapping around put bits of cheese on sticks. I was giving away one of my favourite books I Capture The Castle by Dodie. Later in the evening the lovely Gemma donated her book, Touching The Void. Gemma is a climber herself and had already given some to her climbing friends, a great idea and I hope it goes well!

Then the lovely L donated her copies of Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist (who I was very excited to discover has a new book out!!! I love his writing, even though it is terrifying!).

And there were so many more! I was flitting about all over the pub for most of the evening (we managed to take it all over, even so far as making the quiz upstairs do a book round! Thanks Will!) and so didn't even get to properly meet some of the givers, but thank you to all who contributed copies of How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff, Misery by Stephen King, Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson, even more Player of Games, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. We gave away an estimated 200 World Book Night Books in the end. Thanks especially to the Leeds Library Service who turned up promoting their event The Big Bookend in June (of which more later...) and let me rant about the promotion of reading for pleasure by librarians for a while...bliss! It was lovely to meet every single one of you.

On the other side of the room, a marvellous thing was happening. Not only was tonight a World Book Night event, but the Travelling Suitcase Library was propping up the bar too in its own quiet unassuming way. Fisticusfts were breaking out over the massive range of books being swapped, as people turned up with a bag full, and took two away. About 300 books must have been passed through that suitcase, which is looking a little battered, by the end of the night!

Again, it was marvellous to have such interesting conversations with such a range of people about books-I especially loved the couple arguing over Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and whether Jane Eyre was a horror already or not. I also got to do my favourite thing in the world and mock ridiculous scifi covers with the lovely Leigh of The Good Stuff blog. Oh and drink heavily. The Ram Tam was delicious, Arcadia, thank you.

There was such a range of people at the event! Regulars, locals, students, Buns and Roses WI ladies who made me feel very unstylish, The Yorkshire Rad Fat Society (all power to you!), scifi nerds who got to geekgasm over the lack of a spaceship on a cover, vintage lovelies squealing over who they want to be more, Topaz or Cassandra (Topaz, always Topaz), sporty types, booky types, not-so-booky types. Every single one left with a pile of books. My quote of the night has to go to my friend Chris, who saw a book from the Travelling Suitcase Library, read the 'grrrr guns' cover, and said 'it's by a Marine! That's going in MY pocket'.

THANK YOUS

To Jane and Alex from http://www.forbookssake.net/ for a lovely afternoon in Cafe164, and for Sara for letting me do a book swap there.
To Arcadia, for once again proving that it's not just a pub, it's a family. Tom, Pyke and Sarah you guys were STARS and BRILLIANT, and Rhian, thank you xx
To L, C and C, for listening to my every more nervous rants, and appreciating my buffet efforts. I love you guys and I really hope you enjoy your holiday books!
To J, L, W, L, L, H and A, for the giggles and for ignoring me when I'd had a few!
The Barbara and the Leeds Libraries, you rock beyond measure.
To L and D, thank you for the cake and congratulations!
To K for Lifts and Dips (recipe PLEASE)
I'm going to be about all afternoon, with a suitcase brimming with books for all the family (might even squeeze in a couple of story tellings if I can find my story telling hat!) but once again I need your help!

In the past the Suitcase has catered more for adult-only events, so my collection of books for children and young adults is to be honest poor.

If anyone has any children's books left after the call out last month for the Book That Appeal for the Birmingham school (which I'm pleased to say had a fantastic response and the children love their books!) please let me know.

I know this is the time of year when many people move house, if you are having a clear out I'm more than happy to collect from you. Or you can leave the books in Arcadia at any time.

For more info on the festival go to http://www.ilovewestleeds.co.uk/Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544697137603948651.post-64578687320960705812011-06-01T10:53:00.000-07:002011-06-01T11:05:39.341-07:00Book That!So today I threw all my toys out of my pram a bit over this article http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2011/jun/01/three-in-10-uk-children-own-no-books?CMP=twt_gu from a report from The National Literacy Trust that 3/10 children do not have their own books.

Now I know that there are millions of children that go without a bed every night and I am in no way saying this is more important. But this is something that quite frankly makes me rage.

Because without fail every single time I set up the Travelling Suitcase Library, someone always says "oh I have sooooo many books I mean to donate".

Really? Well three in ten children DON'T and I'm sorry but that is bollocks.

So in the midst of my Massive Row on twitter about this whole thing, in which I behaved like a petulant child which I'm very sorry for, I was contacted by a primary school teacher working in inner city Birmingham whose children love books, but do not have that much access to them.

I know there are various arguments that unless adults are reading, children won't. That's why I always carry a book everywhere I go, read in public at every opportunity and try and get as many people as possible to do the same, only by normalising reading does it become acceptable, only by saying "actually, this is what we do" do you stop the idea that by reading you are somehow missing out on "having a life".

And how is a child supposed to know if they're a reader or not if they don't have the opportunity to explore reading?

SO I've got this primary school's address and will be sending them the books that are age appropriate from the TSL and my shelves.

I think I've got about 30, which is pathetic and less that a class full. I can't afford to this month but next month I shall be hitting the charity shops in an attempt to get that number up. I didn't start this for profit or personal gain, and anything that gets more people reading, and talking about what they're reading in a open and social way is a Good Thing.

However, I am very concerned that people might think that they can say they run a Travelling Suitcase Library, and make money from the scheme, or benefit in some other way that does not fit in with the ethos of the original project.

With this in mind, I have come up with the following 'manifesto' (I'm thinking more avant-guarde than political party here) which I would ask that anyone wishing to start a Travelling Suitcase Library reads, and signs, before attaching the name to their project.

Any questions, or anything you think I've got hideously wrong, as usual, just let me know.

Jess

Manifesto
1.The Travelling Suitcase Library must provide as wide a range of books that can fit into a suitcase. There must be no discrimination shown between genre, literary style or format. For ease, the word ‘book’ used in this manifesto refers to any printed text made available through the Travelling Suitcase Library.

2.The Travelling Suitcase Library must not actively promote any racist, sexist, transphobic or cissexist, homophobic, ablest, classist or fatist attitudes in the material it provides, however freedom of speech should never be compromised. Any books that display such attitudes that end up in the suitcase must be swapped with discretion and trigger warnings given if this is appropriate.

3.The Travelling Suitcase Library must be free. There must never be any membership, signing fee, fines, or any other financial reward for providing the service.

4.The Travelling Suitcase Library must go to as wide a range of events and locations as possible. The Travelling Suitcase Library may accept complimentary entrance to an event, but must in return promote that event in some way. The Travelling Suitcase Library must make it clear in promotional material that the event charges an entrance fee.

5.The Travelling Suitcase Library must use second hand books. All books must come from donations, second hand shops, charity shops, library sales, or other events.

6.Any books donated to the Travelling Suitcase Library from publishing houses should be included, but in no way promoted. No one book should be promoted above another, as the focus should be on finding the right book for the individual.

7.The Travelling Suitcase Library must promote reading for pleasure at all times.

8.The Travelling Suitcase Library must never impeach upon any public or educational library. Any one looking for a particular book must be encouraged to go to their public library first. The Travelling Suitcase Library must fight against any public library closures.

9.The Travelling Suitcase Library must be an environmentally friendly as possible. If a bus is available, a bus must be used over a car, for example.

10.The Travelling Suitcase Library does not necessarily have to be in a suitcase, though it probably makes more sense if it is!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544697137603948651.post-69455908772423081782011-05-16T04:42:00.000-07:002011-05-16T04:46:51.477-07:00LS6 Beer FestI'm very very happy to announce that the lovely and gorgeous people at LS6 Beer Festival, running Friday 3 - Saturday 4 June in Left Bank Leeds (the big Church thing on Cardigan Road) have allowed me to run a book swap!

The Travelling Suitcase Library with of course be there, bigger than ever with the recent influx of donations (thanks as ever to @thoughtlessjoe, @saratheresaphoto, @gazpachodragon and everyone else who brought books to Book Club this Sunday). Seeing as I will be far to busy pulling pints and dancing like a loon to be on the book table all the time, it will be an incredibly informal book swap, but as ever do ask for any recomendations and BRING YOUR TOMES!!!

More info about the fest, including where to buy tickets, can be found here...

http://ls6beerfest.com/Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2544697137603948651.post-29127470503512136262011-05-09T06:53:00.000-07:002011-05-09T07:03:51.600-07:00Travelling Suitcase Library On Tour Summer '11Lots of exciting things planned for May/June/July

I will be dragging the suitcase around with me.
